They were still locked in each other’s arms when an onslaught of creaking and groaning heralded the welcome return of the heating early next morning. Cassie stirred, Nick muttered something and tightened his grasp, and she sank back into sleep. When she woke again cold white light was sifting through a crack in the curtains, and there were sounds of activity outside.

Nick raised his head and looked into Cassie’s heavy eyes. ‘Good morning,’ he whispered.

Her eyes fell. ‘Good morning,’ she whispered back, wondering what to do next.

He freed an arm to look at his watch. ‘Hell, it’s after eight.’ He dropped a swift kiss on her mouth, then leapt out of bed and raced to the bathroom.

Cassie stared after him, lying very still as she went over the events of the night. In one way she had no regrets. She’d made her first essay into the art of love with an expert in the field. But Nick Seymour was a man who could cause havoc with her life if she wasn’t careful. She’d recovered from her teenage crush on him with lightning speed when he was the cause of Julia’s separation from Max, and since then she’d looked on him as the enemy. Now that was all changed by the freak of nature which had marooned them together for a night. An unforgettable night. But she couldn’t blame Nick. In the circumstances any man worth his salt would have accepted her challenge. But then, she would never have got into bed with any other man, let alone pleaded with him to make love to her. Nor was Nick just any man. He was still, technically, her sister’s brother-in-law. The fact that making love with him had been magical was irrelevant. Nick was Max Seymour’s brother.

‘Right, your turn,’ said Nick, coming out of the bathroom. Fully dressed, newly shaved, his damp hair tidier than usual, the thickly fringed eyes smiling at her with a new, intimate warmth, he was hard to resist. But when he bent to kiss her, she turned her head away. ‘Shy?’ he teased.

‘You’ve brushed your teeth,’ she muttered. ‘I haven’t.’

‘Then get a move on.’ He went over to the window and drew back the curtains on a white world gleaming with pale sunlight. ‘It’s stopped snowing. I’ll go down and see if there’s any news—and order breakfast. I’m starving.’

Cassie was grateful for the return of electricity, which granted her a hot bath. Afterwards she took time to make up her face, embarrassed to find that it was tender from contact with the stubble she’d once thought so cool. By the time Nick came back she was dressed in a thick shirt under a canary-yellow sweater, and elderly fawn cords, her hair loose on her shoulders but reasonably tame. Unlike her heart, which thumped at the sight of him.

‘Any news?’ she asked coolly, packing her wool suit away.

‘One of Ted Bennett’s men came in early and got the emergency generator going. Snow ploughs have been out clearing the road, but we’re advised to wait for an hour or two until gritters make the surface safe.
